VIDEO: 5 Defining Doctrines in Presidential History

Trump doctrine? It all started with the Monroe Doctrine in 1823, when the new American nation began to throw its weight around and flex some muscle in the world.

The History Dr looks at five enormously influential foreign policy doctrines by five different presidents, to see how they have shaped world history. A doctrine is simply a statement of goals that America has in the world.

And you can judge what’s important to a president by the kind of doctrine he carries out.

Many expected that President Trump’s America First statements during his campaign would presage an isolationist foreign policy. With several military actions in his first 90 days, he has surprised observers. We’ll see whether he will be more aggressive than his predecessors in situations like North Korea or Iran. Will there be a Trump Doctrine? Or perhaps the Trump Doctrine will be a rejection of doctrines!

We’re trying a new video format

Rather than cut out all the details, we’re experimenting with a format to first provide a brief overview for when you are pressed for time, followed by a longer explanation. This video has a two minute overview of the top five, then a five minute in-depth description.

Check out our video to see which presidential doctrines the History Dr picked as the most defining of American history. And feel free to disagree in the comments.
